Eye Test for NEA N3 Licence Application

If your job requires you to apply for an N3 Licence, you’ll need to complete an eye examination as part of the licensing process. Here’s what the test includes and what you need to know before booking your screening.

What Is the NEA N3 Licence?

The N3 Licence is a regulatory licence, issued by Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA), that allows you to handle high-powered lasers.

Who Needs the N3 Licence?

An N3 Licence is often required for roles such as:

In most cases, your employer or HR team will tell you if your position requires an N3 Licence. If you’re unsure, you can check with them or refer to NEA’s licensing guidelines.

Why an Eye Test Is Part of the N3 Licence Process

Because you work with lasers, your vision directly affects workplace safety. You must be able to:

NEA requires a test to confirm that your eyesight is reliable enough to meet the above standards.

What Happens During Your N3 Licence Eye Test

When you come for your N3 Licence assessment, your ophthalmologist performs the vision checks required by NEA and, where relevant, additional tests based on the type of laser work you do.

These tests appear in the MC-2 form as required for preplacement examinations of all laser workers.

1. Colour Vision Test
This is to confirm you can accurately distinguish colours used in hazard labels, warning signs, chemical classifications, and emergency symbols.

2. Visual Acuity Test (Distance and Near)
This is typically done with and without your glasses to ensure you can read safety instructions, laser warning signs, labels, and monitors at work, regardless of distance.

3. Eye Medical History Review
Your ophthalmologist reviews your past and current eye history, family history, and any symptoms you may have. This helps identify underlying conditions that might affect vision safety.

What To Bring For the N3 Licence Eye Test

Before your appointment, make sure you have everything you need so your screening goes smoothly.

Here’s what (and how) you can prepare:

Your Eye Test Results and NEA Report

After your examination, your ophthalmologist reviews your results and confirms whether your vision meets NEA’s standards for N3 licensing. If any part of your vision requires further assessment, your doctor will explain the findings and what they mean for your application.

Your NEA medical report includes:

Reports are usually ready the same day or next business day, depending on the complexity of your examination. If you need your report urgently for a licence application deadline, you can request priority processing.

Can You Pass With Glasses or Contact Lenses?

Yes, you can usually pass the N3 licence eye test even if you wear glasses or contact lenses. NEA allows corrected vision (vision with glasses) as long as it meets the required visual acuity levels.

Your colour vision, however, cannot be corrected with lenses. If you have a colour vision deficiency, your doctor will advise you on what that means for working with laser or hazardous substances.
